YOSE 寄席

VIEW BY

Yose 寄席 were the variety halls of Edo-period Japan, where crowds packed in for rakugo storytellers. The posters outside were painted in yose-moji: big, heavy lettering drawn so thick and tight there's barely a gap between strokes, for a full house with no empty seats.

The Yose line puts each of our five cities and its virtue into one of those framed hall posters. The virtue kanji and city name go on the front, the city in katakana runs down the back, and each one is numbered, 其ノ壱 to 其ノ五.
