Yose 寄席 were the variety halls of Edo-period Japan, where crowds packed in for rakugo storytellers. The posters outside were painted in yose-moji, heavy lettering drawn so thick and tight there's barely a gap between strokes, for a full house with no empty seats. This is No. 4 of our five Yose tees: Osaka and its virtue, 力 Strength.

On the front, 力 sits large with 大阪 (Osaka) underneath, inside a framed hall poster with a border of kikkō 亀甲 tortoiseshell hexagons, from our Osaka crest; in Japan the tortoise shell stands for long life and staying power. Down the back, オーサカ (Osaka in katakana) runs top to bottom in a tall panel, with 其ノ四 · 五都五徳 · 5C5V underneath: No. 4 of Five Cities, Five Virtues. A vermilion panel with cream lettering on a vintage white shirt. The 力 is hand-drawn for this design, so it reads properly at a distance. Made to order, sizes S to 4XL.

Fit note: Oversized and boxy with dropped shoulders. Take your usual size for the relaxed look, or size down for a closer fit.

Care Instructions:

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Hang or lay flat to dry and never iron directly over the print.
