A hand-stitched baseball over 札幌 (Sapporo) in white kanji, with red stitching on the ball. 希 in white on the left side.

Baseball came to Sapporo in the 1870s with an American teacher at Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1877 he had his students make their own bats and balls, and they played bare-handed on the school grounds after class. The ball here has the hand-stitched look of those first balls, set over the city's name the way Japanese school and club badges put the emblem above the name. 希 (ki) means hope, Sapporo's virtue in Five Cities, Five Virtues.
