Pay designers, not influencers

Pay designers, not influencers

Most brands pay people to wear their clothes. We pay the people who design them. Send us a design. If we make it, you get half the profit on every sale for two years, with every number shown.

Why we do it

The person with the pencil gets the least.

Musicians know this feeling. Your song can be played millions of times and you still can't make a living from it. The money goes everywhere except to the person who made the thing.

Fashion works the same way. The marketing money goes to whoever has the most followers: free clothes, a fee, a discount code. The person who drew the design usually gets a one-off fee, if they get paid at all, and their name is nowhere.

I don't think that's right. So at 5C5V the money goes to the person who made the work, for as long as it sells.

How it works

Four steps

Design it

Make something that belongs in 5C5V, for a cap, tee, jumper, hoodie, beanie or framed print. The designer guide shows every blank and size.

Send it

Use 5C5V Studio and choose Pitch a design, or email matthew@5c5v.co.uk. Any time, no deadline.

We decide

We look at every design and tell you whether we'd like to make it. If not, we never use it.

You earn

We make a sample, you sign the licence, and it goes on sale with your name on it. Then you get paid every month.

The terms

Everything in writing

01Who can pitch
  • Anyone aged 16 or over, anywhere in the world. It's free, and you don't need experience.
  • If you're 16 or 17 and we'd like to make your design, a parent or guardian signs the licence with you.
  • It must be your own original work, and you must have the right to use everything in it. No characters, logos or trademarks that belong to someone else.
  • If you use kanji or Japanese text, use it properly. Our Respect Notes explain how.
02What we make
  • We look at every design, but we can't make them all. We choose based on how original it is, how well it fits 5C5V and how well it'd work on the product.
  • We'll confirm we've got your design within three working days.
  • If we'd like to make it, we'll send you the licence to read before anything happens. Nothing is made without your agreement.
  • If we don't make it, we never use it, and we delete your details and files within six months.
03Your share of every sale
  • For two years from the day your design goes on sale, you get 50% of the profit on every sale.
  • Profit is what the customer paid, including the delivery charge, minus the cost of making and posting it and the payment fee.
  • You get your own discount code to share. Any discount on your code comes out of our half, not yours.
  • Every month you get a statement listing each sale: what the customer paid, what it cost to make and post, fees, the profit and your half. Your share is paid within 15 days of the end of each month, by bank transfer or PayPal, in your own currency if you're outside the UK.
  • Only paid orders count. Anything refunded or returned is taken off. Any tax due on your earnings in your country is yours to sort.
04Your rights
  • You keep the copyright in everything you send us.
  • If we make your design, you give 5C5V an exclusive licence to make and sell it for two years from the day it goes on sale. In that time it's sold only on 5c5v.co.uk. You can always show it in your portfolio.
  • While it's on sale, we can use your name, your design and photos of the product to promote it.
  • We won't change your design without your agreement, beyond sizing it and matching colours for the product.
  • After two years the rights are all yours again, unless we both agree to carry on.
05Competition entries
  • If you entered the competition and didn't win, you can ask us to consider your design here. We won't unless you ask.
  • The competition has its own rules, cash prizes and deadline. They're on the competition page.
06The fine print
  • We use your details only to look at your design and, if we make it, to pay you.
  • If we ever change these terms, we'll update this page. Designs already on sale keep the terms they were signed on.
  • Run by 5C5V LIMITED (company number 16789464), 43 Chichester Close, Hartlepool TS25 2QT, United Kingdom. Governed by the law of England and Wales.
