SAPPORO 希

The Sapporo collection is the 5C5V range built on 希 (ki), the kanji for hope. It is the first character of 希望 (kibō), the Japanese word for hope.

Sapporo is the main city of Hokkaido, Japan's northern island, and the fifth most populous city in the country. It gets an average of 4.79 metres of snow a year. It hosted the first Winter Olympics held in Asia, in 1972, and its Snow Festival, first held in 1950, draws more than two million visitors every February. In 1877 the American teacher William S. Clark left Sapporo with the words "Boys, be ambitious!", a line still quoted across Japan.

I paired Sapporo with hope because, in the 5C5V telling, the city stands for clarity and renewal. Long northern winters ask for steady optimism, and that is the hope I mean.

In the collection now: hoodies in black and French navy; embroidered T-shirts in black and white; cuffed organic cotton beanies in blue, navy and grey; fisherman beanies in five colours; caps in navy and black, two-tone baseball caps and the First Light and Pale North caps; and canvas high tops. The KIROKU Sumi 001 tee, Letters from Heaven, is about the first artificial snow crystal, grown on a rabbit hair at Hokkaido University in 1936. Everything is made to order.
