In Japanese baseball, 18 is the ace's number. Teams give it to the best starting pitcher on the staff, and it's a big deal to be handed it. The story usually goes back to Tadashi Henry Wakabayashi, who switched to 18 with the Osaka Tigers in the 1930s, and the Yomiuri Giants in Tokyo later made it the number only their ace could wear. Japanese pitchers have carried it to the majors ever since. It's the number every kid who pitches dreams of, which is why it sits with Tokyo and 夢. 夢 (yume) means dream, Tokyo's virtue in Five Cities, Five Virtues.
