On 12 March 1936, in a cold room at Hokkaido Imperial University, the physicist Ukichiro Nakaya grew the first artificial snow crystal. He hung a single rabbit hair in the cold and let the ice build on it, because a rabbit hair has just enough tiny knots for a crystal to start.
