Inside the Sakuramon gate of Osaka Castle sits the Takoishi 蛸石, the \"octopus stone\", the largest stone in the castle walls: one slab of granite 5.5 metres high and 11.7 metres wide, roughly 108 tonnes (some sources say 130). It was set in place in 1624 by Ikeda Tadao, when the Tokugawa rebuilt the castle. No stone that size moves itself. On 12 March 1936, in a cold room at Hokkaido Imperial University, the physicist Ukichiro Nakaya grew the first artificial snow crystal. He hung a single rabbit hair in the cold and let the ice build on it, because a rabbit hair has just enough tiny knots for a crystal to start.
